Tech Talk: Why is my mouth dry all the time?
Short term dry mouth can be caused by stress, illness or excess consumption of alcohol, tobacco or caffeine. Long term dry mouth is usually a side effect of medications that you may have to take on a routine schedule or, in rare cases, Sjogren’s Syndrome, or even some form of cancer. To find the cause of your chronic dry mouth, you should review your medical history with your physician and dentist. Products such as Biotene gels, rinses, and sprays will help to alleviate some symptoms of dry mouth.
Sipping water frequently, chewing sugarless gum, and avoiding sweets will lessen the effects to your teeth. You may have to visit your dentist more frequently for cleanings and checkups to protect your teeth and catch small cavities before they become large problems.
